El MoMa demolerá el American Folk
Art Museum en Nueva York

Fue abierto hace 12 años y
parece que el American Folk Art Museum está programado para demolerse como
parte de los planes del MoMA para su desarrollo.
Este museo fue diseñado y acabado en 2001 por Todd Williams and Billie Tsien (Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects)
construido en un bloque de 12 x 30 metros en la Calle 53 siendo el primer museo
construido en New York en más de tres décadas.
El museo está rodeado en tres de
sus caras por el Museum of Modern Art. Pero su fachada los distingue del MoMA gracias a sus
paneles de bronce blanco que lo revisten.
En 2012 el MoMA decidió adquirir
el edificio como parte de su plan de expansión que también incluía una torre
diseñada por Jean Nouvel, y así se dispondría de 3.000 m² de espacio
expositivo, en palabras de los oficiales la demolición del American Folk Art
Museum se debe a que el edificio no se ajusta a lso planes de la fachada opaca
y de cristal del proyecto del MoMA.
Así que el American Folk Art
Museum fue reubicado a un cercano edifico más pequeño, después de que se viera forzado a
vender el museo debido a dificultades económicas.
Los arquitectos Todd Williams
and Billie Tsien hicieron las siguiente declaración: "El American Folk Art
Museum sobresale como un ejemplo de modestia y concebido a propósito en un
lugar de manera artesanal para las artes y el público; un tipo de edificio raro
en una ciudad que a menudo está definida por lo grande y lo impersonal.
Permanecemos orgullosos del mismo, y estamos profundamente apenados que un edificio
significativo y que fue fuente de regocijo e inspiración para muchos vaya a
desaparecer para siempre."

MoMA is to
demolish the American Folk Art Museum in New York

It was
opened 12 years ago and the American Folk Art Museum looks like it is to be
demolished as part of MoMa’s redevelopment plans.
This
museum was designed and completed in 2001 by Todd Williams and Billie Tsien (Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects) built in a 12 x 30 metres lot on 53rd street and was the first new museum built in New York in over three decades.
The Museum is surrounded on three sides by the Museum of Modern Art. But
the façade of the Folk Art Museum set itself apart from The MoMA due to its metal
panels of white bronze which clad the façade.
In 2012 MoMA
decided to acquire the building as part of their expansion plan this also
included a designed by Jean Nouvel, so it will have an additional 3,000 m² of
exhibition space, the demolition of the American Folk Art Museum from the words
of officials is because the former building’s
design did not fit their plans due to the opaque facade and the glass of the MoMA
project .
And so the American Folk Art Museum was relocated to a smaller building nearby, after it was forced to sell the
museum due to running into financial difficulties.
The architects Todd Williams and
Billie Tsien, produced this statement: ‘The Folk Art Building stands as an
example of a modest and purposefully conceived and crafted space for art and
the public; a building type that is all too rare in a city that is often
defined by bigness and impersonality. We remain enormously proud of it, and are
deeply saddened that a significant building that was a source of enjoyment and
inspiration for so many will now be lost forever.’
